One of the stars of animated sensation KPop Demon Hunters says the movie's success "feels like a dream". The film, about a fictional girl band who live a double life defending humanity from a supernatural threat, has become Netflix's most-watched animated film ever since its release in June.

Chart-topping songs, creative animation and fun K-pop Easter eggs all helped KPop Demon Hunters become the year’s surprising success story.

Originality feels like it's in short supply, so it's a good thing the movie and game have taken off as well as they have.

“Renaissance.” “Barbie.” “Brat.” Every summer, a pop-culture phenomenon seems to take over social media or claim a spot on your next Spotify Wrapped. This summer is no different thanks to “KPop Demon Hunters,” an animated Netflix movie that follows Rumi, Mira and Zoey — K-pop superstars by day, fierce demon hunters by night.

And it's not just the film that's a summer hit. The “KPop Demon Hunters” soundtrack has topped the charts — debuting at No. 1 on Billboard's Soundtracks chart and No. 8 on the all-genre Billboard 200.

According to the Official Charts Company, it's the first K-pop single to top the UK chart since PSY's Gangnam Style in 2012. Carl Smith, editor of the official charts tells BBC Newsbeat it's a "sign of how popular K-pop is right now".

After the movie was an international sensation, KPop Demon Hunters seems like it is officially getting animated sequels and more.
