As intense heat continues to grip Central Florida, people flocked to the beach to cool off, but with a recent shark bite, many took extra precautions while enjoying the waves

New Smyrna Beach, a surfing hub south of Daytona Beach, is widely known as the “Shark Bite Capital of the World,” according to WESH and The Daytona Beach News-Journal. Less than two weeks before the July 18 attack, a man identified as Matthew Bender was bitten by a shark while surfing in the Florida city, per FOX 35.

An 18-year-old surf instructor was attacked by a shark in New Smyrna Beach on Friday. Sam Hollis sustained a shark bite on his foot while surfing and was transported for medical treatment with non-life-threatening injuries, Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue said.
