With widespread flooding ongoing and more rain expected, the South Dakota DOT is asking residents not to travel if at all possible.

MITCHELL – The South Dakota Department of Transportation has issued a no travel advisory for all state highway sections in southeast South Dakota that are experiencing flooding due to heavy rain in the area, according to a release from the Mitchell office of the SDDOT.

A ‘no travel advisory’ has been issued for all state highway sections in southeast South Dakota on Friday beginning at 3:00 p.m., according to the SD Department of Transportation (DOT). The area is experiencing flooding due to heavy rain.

A car went off the road into a slough just north of Lennox, South Dakota. Heavy rains left many area roads flooded on June 21, 2024. Officials are warning about flooding across many areas in southeast South Dakota amid a days-long deluge.

Many highways in southeast South Dakota are closed because of flooding, the state Department of Transportation said this morning. Some routes impacted by flooding are open with the use of flaggers guiding motorists through sections of saturated roadway.

A flash flood warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for south central South Dakota until 2:45 a.m. (CDT) Friday.
