The company is targeting business customers with its new Surface Laptop 5G, but the idea is good enough that other companies should sell one, too.

Microsoft didn’t launch its 2025 lineup of Surface devices with a 5G option. Instead, it waited a few months for interest to die down enough to release its business-end version with a starting price nearly twice that of the one built for the average joe.

The Surface Laptop 5G uses the same Core Ultra Series 2 chips (codenamed Lunar Lake) as the PCs Microsoft released in January. These chips include respectable Intel Arc integrated GPUs, as well as neural processing units (NPUs) fast enough to qualify for Windows 11's extra Copilot+ PC features.

The new Surface Laptop 5G is the first member of Microsoft’s Surface Laptop lineup to feature support for 5G cellular networks. But that option is only available to folks who purchase the newest version of the company’s Surface Laptop for Business. The latest Surface Laptops for consumers remain WiFi-only.

I was familiar with the 13-inch Surface Laptop before even handling it, having reviewed the same design around this time last year. Microsoft's design is mostly unchanged, but the key difference here is cost.

The next Surface Laptop is likely to launch in the new handful of months, powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X2 with more power and better battery life.
