BMW is issuing a recall across its entire range of electric vehicles to fix a critical software bug that could abruptly shut down the drive motor. The automaker says that the loss of power could occur with little notice—a concern that prompted the safety campaign.

The recall is the result of a software issue affecting over 70,000 vehicles and four different models, including the i4 hatchback and iX SUV.

The manufacturer blames software for the issue, which erroneously triggers a fail-safe shutdown of the high-voltage system. It can be fixed over the air.
