U.S. sandwich chain Subway on Monday named former Burger King executive Jonathan Fitzpatrick as its CEO starting July 28, tapping a fast-food industry veteran to lift sales and help expand its business globally.

Jonathan Fitzpatrick will take the sandwich chain’s top spot on July 28, and inherits AUV struggles and an ongoing push to modernize its menu.

It’s been roughly eight months since Subway CEO John Chidsey announced his intentions to retire at year’s end. The previous Burger King executive was the chain’s first CEO outside the founding family.

Subway named a former Burger King executive as its next chief executive, with a mandate to improve U.S. sales and help expand globally. Jonathan Fitzpatrick is set to become Subway’s first new CEO since private-equity firm Roark Capital bought the sandwich chain for around $9.

Fitzpatrick is scheduled to start at Subway on July 28, taking over a company with dual headquarters in Shelton and Miami, and nearly 37,000 restaurants worldwide. He will “work closely with interim CEO Carrie Walsh to ensure a seamless transition,” the news release also noted.
