Mall-based teen retailer Claire’s, known for helping to usher teens into a key rite of passage _ ear piercing _ but now struggling with a big debt load and changing consumer tastes, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The fashion and beauty chain may not be as big a name as Claire's, but it has nearly 200 stores that are expected to be shut down.

Claire's filed for bankruptcy in Delaware on Wednesday, marking the second time the teen accessories chain has entered Chapter 11 proceedings. In its bankruptcy filing, the jewelry retailer listed both its liabilities and assets between $1 billion to $10 billion.

The retailer has struggled since its 2018 bankruptcy and isn’t well positioned for tariffs and other economic headwinds, analysts said.
