The trial of Labour MP Tulip Siddiq over corruption allegations has formally begun in Bangladesh. The former minister did not attend the hearing, where investigators from the country's corruption watchdog set out the case against her and 20 other individuals, including her aunt, her mother, her brother and her sister.

The corruption trial of ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 17 others, including her nieces Azmina Siddiq and British MP Tulip Siddiq, began on Wednesday in a Dhaka court over alleged irregularities in the allocation of housing plots.

Tulip Siddiq says her corruption trial in Bangladesh is a “farce” driven by a “political vendetta”.

Ms Siddiq is accused of using her familial connection to deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina to obtain state-owned land in the South Asian country.
