Astronomers manning an asteroid warning system caught a glimpse of a large, bright object zipping through the solar system late on July 1, 2025.

Astronomers have observed an object that originated from beyond our solar system, thought to be an interstellar comet, speeding through our celestial neighborhood.

NASA has discovered a new interstellar comet that's currently located about 420 million miles away from Earth. The space agency spotted the quick-moving object with the Atlas telescope in Chile on Tuesday and confirmed it was a comet from another star system. The new interstellar comet's official name is 3I/ATLAS.

By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Astronomers are tracking a newly spotted comet hailing from parts unknown, only the third time such an interstellar object has been observed visiting our solar system.

Comet 3I/ATLAS was discovered on July 1. “It came from outside our solar system and right now, it's inside the orbit of Jupiter…,” said an official of the NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS).

The comet should be visible by telescope through September, before it gets too close to the sun, and reappear in December on the other side of the sun.
