Golden State Valkyries forward Kayla Thornton, a WNBA veteran, on becoming an All-Star for first time: ‘It’s a blessing’

Kayla Thornton's professional basketball journey has spanned more than a decade and taken her to eight countries (and one territory) to play for more than a dozen teams. It wasn't until last year that she was drafted for the first time.

The Valkyries are 10-12 to begin the year, and Thornton has been the team’s most consistent player. While her last few games have been difficult (she’s made just 3 of her last 21 field goals), the 6’1 forward’s impact has also extended far beyond the court.

Former UTEP women’s basketball star and Irvin High School graduate Kayla Thornton is looking forward the first WNBA All-Star Game of her career on Saturday night. Thornton is having the best season of her career in 2025.

Golden State Valkyries veteran Kayla Thornton was named as a reserve for the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game, the first such honor of her career.

Kayla Thornton, Gabby Williams, Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron will be making their All-Star debuts in Indianapolis later this month as they were all chosen on Sunday as reserves for the game.
