Heavy rains have lashed parts of southeastern China as Tropical Storm Podul made landfall after leaving one missing on the self-governing island of Taiwan.

Tropical storm Podul dumped torrential rain on southern China on Thursday, and caused widespread disruption in Hong Kong after tearing through Taiwan and leaving 143 people injured.

Typhoon Podul weakened to a severe tropical storm when it roared ashore in southeastern China early Thursday, state media said, after carving a path across Taiwan, shutting down businesses, grounding flights and knocking out power to thousands of homes.

Tropical Storm Podul has caused severe disruption in southern China and Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, authorities issued a black rainstorm warning, leading to cancellations of flights, school closures, and a postponed hearing of Jimmy Lai.
