The West Nile Virus has been detected in a mosquito sample in Mercer County, and residents are advised to take extra precautions to reduce mosquito breeding habitat and prevent bites.

According to a press release from Vector Disease Control International, which monitors mosquito activity in Pennsylvania, this is the third case in Mercer County and the second case specifically in Grove City.

Fourteen human cases of West Nile virus, including three cases requiring hospitalization, have been reported in the state this summer. Cases have been identified in nine counties: Cass, Burleigh, Hettinger, McLean, Mercer, Richland, Morton, Kidder and Stutsman. Most cases have been reported since mid-July, with cases nearly doubling this week.

Routine West Nile virus testing by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has "identified positive mosquito pools in our community."

The sample was collected in the borough of Mercer and is the fourth sample in Mercer County to test positive for West Nile Virus in 2025.

Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus have officially been detected across all five boroughs, according to the New York City Health Department. As of Friday, mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus have been found in 89 ZIP codes.

The Knox County government plans to spray for mosquitoes after the Health Department detected West Nile virus.
