Comet Machholz was discovered by the late Donald Machholz in 1986. A much weaker shower is the Alpha Capricornids, which begin about July 3, peaks on July 31, and ends on Aug. 15.
The best time to view the meteor shower is during the night and predawn hours away from light pollution. The shower usually begins around 10 p.m., and peaks at approximately 2 a.m.

According to NASA, the Perseids meteor shower is considered the best meteor shower of the year. In 2025, it's set to be active from around July 17 to Aug. 23.
