Chilean copper giant Codelco has halted mining at its flagship El Teniente mine and postponed its quarterly results announcement as it continued efforts on Friday to reach five trapped workers following a deadly collapse.

(Reuters) -Chilean copper miner Codelco said on Thursday that one worker died at the Andesita project of its El Teniente mine after what it called a “seismic event” around 5:30 p.m. local time. The company said in a statement it was looking for another five workers, and that nine workers had various injuries but were out of serious risk.

Codelco - which runs the mine - has been sanctioned 29 times since 2021 and has had seven fatal accidents in that time, Chile's mining regulator says.
