According to ESPN’S Tim MacMahon in the latest episode of the Hoop Collective Podcast, the Rockets are not rushing to offer Durant a max extension.

Fred VanVleet signed a new contract this offseason for a maximum of two years, with the final year being 2026-27. It’s possible that by 2027-28, Reed Sheppard could be ready to take the reins at point guard, full-time.

Kevin Durant and the Rockets may not reach a quick resolution on contract extension talks, as Houston isn't planning on handing out max money to the veteran star. Tim MacMahon discussed the Rockets' plans with Durant on the "Hoop Collective" podcast.

ESPN's senior NBA reporter Tim MacMahon believes the Rockets will not offer Kevin Durant anything close to a max contract for his extension.

Durant will make $54.7MM during the upcoming season on the final year of his current contract. Since the trade to Houston became official on July 6, he has been eligible for a two-year extension worth roughly $122MM. Waiting another six months would allow him to tack on about $2MM to his maximum extension value.
