Eastern equine encephalitis, better known as EEE, is a very rare disease that as been found locally in mosquito samples. In humans, EEE can often be deadly, and in Massachusetts about half of people identified with EEE have died from the infection, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Mosquitoes collected in Framingham have tested positive for West Nile virus, and officials said Thursday that the city has been elevated to moderate risk of virus transmission.

West Nile virus was detected in a mosquito sample near Oak Grove Cemetery in New Bedford, prompting additional targeted spraying to reduce mosquito populations.
