BATON ROUGE, La. ( Louisiana First) — West Baton Rouge Mosquito Control confirmed the presence of West Nile Virus (WNV) in a mosquito sample.

Health officials advise that mosquitoes in the Upper Valley have tested positive for West Nile Virus. West Nile Virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States. It is most commonly spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito.

The virus was found in mosquito samples collected in Bristol and East Providence in July, according to the state Department of Environmental Management.
