I t's been a year since Google released the Pixel Tablet, a clever new riff on Android tablets that included its own magnetically attaching speaker dock. Now, Google is selling the Pixel Tablet on its own without its clever magnetically charging speaker dock for $100 less.

Alphabet Inc.’s Google rolled out a new version of its $499 lower-end Pixel smartphone, aiming to entice budget-minded shoppers with an updated screen and artificial intelligence features.

Google’s 11-inch Pixel Tablet is available as a standalone slate now, dropping its price by $100 if you don’t need the magnetic charging speaker dock.

Along with the Pixel 8a announcement today, Google is also announcing that the Pixel Tablet is getting an update. The Google Pixel Tablet will now be sold without the speaker dock for $399. It will continue to sell the Pixel Tablet with the speaker dock for $499.

Ever since the Pixel Tablet was announced, I've thought Google should do exactly this. The two-in-one functionality the tablet offers when paired with its dock is novel, but only for shoppers who want both a tablet and a smart display.
