Multiple people died Tuesday and at least a dozen were injured when a powerful tornado tore through a small Iowa town, carving a bleak landscape of destroyed homes, shredded trees and smashed cars.

Some Iowa communities will be waking up Wednesday to sift through the rubble of now-unrecognizable homes and mourn the deaths of neighbors who were killed by a series of tornado-spawning storms that tore through the Midwest yesterday and are now setting their sights on a much broader swath of the US.

What’s left of homes are piles of rubble. Trees are stripped of their bark, while some are uprooted. Dozens of emergency vehicles line streets that are no longer walkable. Power lines are down.
