HARDINESS ZONE.4-8 GROW.Plant the seeds about three-quarters of an inch (2 cm.) deep in moist peat moss and place them in a plastic bag inside the refrigerator for 60 to 90 days. Place the pots in a warm location when they come out of the refrigerator, and once they germinate, place them in a sunny window. Keep the soil moist at all times. WHEN TO PLANT. Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant. TALL.Grows up to 50-60 ft. tall (15-18 m) and 40 ft. wide (12 m). USE.Perfect as a specimen plant in cottage gardens, and city gardens. Highly popular, award-winning Acer x freemanii 'Autumn Blaze' (Freeman Maple) is a fast-growing, large deciduous tree noted for its ascending branch habit and glorious fall color. Its dense, oval to rounded canopy of deeply cut, bright green leaves, turns brilliant orange-scarlet to crimson-red in fall. The delicate foliage holds its color for several weeks before shedding to the ground. This Freeman Maple also provides some winter interest, with its smooth, thin, gray bark that becomes slightly furrowed with age. 'Autumn Blaze' is excellent as a specimen planting and one of the most brilliant Japanese Maples for fall color. It is drought tolerant when established and grows in most soils. Like many large landscape trees, the Autumn Blaze maple tree needs little care. The most critical care aspect is maintaining moist soil around its roots while the tree is young and establishing itself. This tree only needs pruning every other year, in late spring or early summer. And fertilizing is not necessary if you already have rich topsoil. If not, amending it once with an compost, just before planting, is all that is needed. And these trees aren't bothered by car exhaust, so they're perfect for planting along neighborhood streets. Even better, they adapt to a large range of soil conditions and climates.
