When Anas al-Sharif broke down in tears last month while reporting on the Gaza hunger crisis, he was widely praised for giving a voice to ordinary Palestinians.

Nearly 270 journalists and media workers have been killed by Israeli attacks in Gaza in 22 months of war – or about 13 journalists every month – according to a tally by Shireen.ps, a monitoring website named after Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was shot and killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank in 2022.

Al Jazeera confirmed that the outlet's Arabic correspondent, Anas al-Sharif, has been killed by an Israeli strike in Gaza City. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also confirmed his death in a statement to Newsweek, saying "the IDF struck the terrorist Anas Al-Sharif, who posed as a journalist for the Al Jazeera network."
