RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The U.S. Treasury Department on Wednesday announced sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes over alleged suppression of freedom of expression and the ongoing trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Donald Trump has vowed to impose tariffs on Brazil and sanction the judge trying former president Jair Bolsonaro over an alleged coup attempt. The US President has vowed to slap the South American nation with 50 per cent tariffs from Friday unless they call off what he called the "witch hunt" of Bolsonaro.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has hit back against Donald Trump’s looming 50% tariff threat, declaring Brazil will negotiate as a sovereign nation and not submit to intimidation. Lula warned against letting prosecution of Bolsonaro dictate economic decisions.
