President Donald Trump claimed without evidence that the massive revisions to the latest jobs report constituted a “scam.” Yet revisions by the BLS were neither historic nor evidence of corruption.

Without evidence, Trump called the data "rigged" and implied that BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer manipulated the numbers "for political purposes."

The data come after economists have expressed concern that the Trump Administration’s flip-flopping tariff policies and sweeping layoffs at federal agencies could slow economic growth. Some Democratic lawmakers slammed the Administration upon the release of the Labor Department’s report.

President Trump said he directed his team to fire the top Bureau of Labor Statistics official after the bureau issued a weak jobs report on Friday. Trump in a social media post said Erika McEntarfer,

A spokesperson for BLS confirmed that McEntarfer “was terminated today” and that Deputy Commissioner William Wiatrowski will now serve as acting commissioner.

Trump announced on social media that he will replace Erika McEntarfer, who has served as commissioner of the BLS since 2024.

The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics regularly publishes a suite of reports and datasets that businesses, journalists, government agencies and the public use to understand the health of the U.S. economy. The monthly Employment Situation — sometimes called the jobs report — is one of the most widely covered.

Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said on X that McEntarfer was no longer leading the bureau and that William Wiatrowski, the deputy commissioner, would serve as the acting director.
