DEHRADUN: The peaceful Himalayan village of Dharali in Uttarkashi district has been nearly erased after a suspected cloudburst triggered a deadly flash flood and mudslide. In just hours, the village’s landscape was changed forever.

Dharali village, located in Uttarkashi's Rajgarhi tehsil, has a population of 505 and sits near the Kheer Ganga river. On Tuesday, a cloudburst in the region led to flash floods, damaging homes and hotels.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami provided an update on the recent flash flood and mudslide disaster in Uttarkashi district. He said that more than 1,000 people, including devotees and pilgrims from across the country who were stranded,

Rescue efforts in Uttarakhand’s Dharali village entered their fifth day on Saturday, with two bodies recovered so far and more than 60 people feared trapped, The New Indian Express reported.

The Nepali embassy in New Delhi says those rescued remain in Haridwar, Dehradun, and other locations in India.

Rescue and relief operations are continuing in the affected areas after a powerful cloudburst triggered massive flash floods in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district on August 5.

After a cloudburst in Dharali near Gangotri, massive joint rescue efforts by the Indian Army, NDRF, ITBP and SDRF are underway. Over 230 people have been rescued as operations continue under tough weather conditions.

Heavy rains have triggered landslides in northeastern India. The village of Dharali in the state of Uttarakhand was hit particularly hard by a debris avalanche. At least four people were killed, and around 100 are still missing.
