Two uncontained wildfires have charred thousands of acres and reached within a mile of the Western Slope town of Meeker, forcing evacuations as the flames jump highways and the threaten to cross

No containment has been reached on the Elk or Lee fires as of Thursday morning. Both fires were sparked by lightning over the weekend.

The Town of Meeker remains under pre-evacuation status as the Lee Fire, the state's largest, continues to pose a challenge for firefighters who are working around the clock amid hot, dry conditions that are expected to last through at least Friday night.
