Up to a foot of snow is expected across some areas of the Lower Peninsula with a storm system that starts marching across the state around noon on Saturday.

A wind advisory is in effect for all of Southeast Michigan from 10 a.m. Wednesday through 4 a.m. Thursday. Wind gusts of 45-50 mph are possible. Lake-effect snow happens when cold air, often from Canada, moves across the warm water of the Great Lakes. The warming air from the lakes pushes moisture into the lower portion of the atmosphere.
