An Army sergeant opened fire at Fort Stewart, shooting five soldiers and prompting a brief lockdown at one the country’s largest Army bases.

Parts of Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia were locked down Wednesday after an active shooter was reported on the Army post, a spokesperson said.

A 28-year-old army sergeant is in custody after five soldiers were shot. The crime happened at Fort Stewart, an army post in Georgia.

An active shooter has been confirmed at Fort Stewart, and an unknown number of victims are being taken to a local hospital, according to Maj. Charles Egan. Egan said casualties had been confirmed, but it was unclear if that included injuries,
