MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — There are “rays of hope” for a 12-year-old girl critically injured in last week’s deadly shooting at a Catholic church in Minneapolis, though her neurosurgeon cautioned Friday it is still hard to predict whether she will survive.

Sophia is one of 21 people, including 18 children, who were wounded in the attack last week. Fletcher Merkel, 8, and Harper Moyski, 10, died from gunshot injuries. Sophia was shot in the head, where a bullet is still lodged, Galicich said. An important blood vessel was damaged, causing swelling and pressure in her brain.

Dr. Walt Galicich, chief of neurosurgery at Hennepin Healthcare, says Sophia Forchas is in a medically induced coma and that a bullet remains lodged in her brain. He said her future remains uncertain,

I’m gonna be blunt, Sophia is still in critical condition in the intensive care unit. There’s a chance that she may be the third fatality of this event,” he said. “But the door’s been opened a little bit and there’s some rays of hope shining through.

Galicich said Sophia has been in the intensive care unit for 10 days after suffering a gunshot to the left side of her head. He said the bullet remains lodged in her brain. There is no benefit of taking it out,” he said of the bullet, adding that it would be harmful to remove it as this point.
