Channing Tatum talks about his first days on set alongside Marvel icons in Deadpool & Wolverine, and reprising Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday.

It’s been a wild ride for Channing Tatum and his dream of playing Gambit. His solo Gambit film was trapped in development hell for years, bouncing between rewrites and directors until the Disney/Fox merger officially killed it.

Channing Tatum recently opened up about shaping Gambit’s voice for Avengers: Doomsday. In a new interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, he explained why the accent needed adjustments after his debut in Deadpool & Wolverine.

During an interview with Variety, Channing Tatum mentioned that despite Gambit being one of Deadpool & Wolverine ’s most popular elements, studio executives “really had to wrap their mind around the accent and how people are going to understand him” for Avengers: Doomsday. The actor’s solution? Tone down his character’s accent. In Tatum’s words:

Doomsday won't sound like that thick, deliberately incomprehensible Louisiana drawl he delivered in Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor has already made that clear, but now he offers further insights into how he found the right balance to sell the powers that be at Marvel.

Avengers: Doomsday will use Gambit for narrative exposition, Channing Tatum confirmed. He admitted that's also a weird choice because the character's accent is hilariously confusing. Tatum promised fans they would hear more of Gambit's ramblings in Avengers: Doomsday,
