The Memphis Shelby County Schools board has approved a donation from xAI to address maintenance issues at four schools in Whitehaven and Westwood, following a 7 to 2 vote on the proposal. The donation from xAI will focus on improving infrastructure at John P.

The school board voted 7-2 to accept in-kind donations from xAI at four district schools without each imprvement needing to come before the board.

Memphis school board members approved a donation from Elon Musk’s company Tuesday that could reduce growing building maintenance costs. But it brings the district into ongoing local pushback against xAI.

The Elon Musk Foundation also provided a large donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Memphis to fill in federal funding gap.
