Demand for Treasurys came back and yields fell as this week’s batch of labor data started with a bit of a whimper.

Treasury yields were falling Wednesday morning, deepening their decline a bit as investors weighed fresh data showing the U.S. economy had fewer job openings in July than expected. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was shedding about 5 basis points to around 4.

The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond was down more than 6 basis points to 4.908%. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury was more than 5 basis points lower at 4.221%. One basis point equals 0.01% and prices move inversely to yields.

Treasury yields keep rising as markets watch the legal battle around tariffs, worrying that an unfavorable ruling could add to Washington’s fiscal troubles. There are also concerns that the U.S. economy could overheat and fuel inflation.
