The Ravens released John Hoyland on Saturday, which head coach John Harbaugh said was due to needs elsewhere on the roster rather than anything about Hoyland's performance. Harbaugh's comments about Loop made it clear that the sixth-round pick has established himself as the likely successor to Justin Tucker in the kicking game for the Ravens.

Or maybe this is exactly what the Ravens wanted, in a way. This is just training camp, after all, and the team is evaluating its new kicker while replacing a longtime franchise cornerstone. Tyler Loop had a 56-yard field goal to tie it.

The Ravens, though, didn’t ever doubt that Loop had the talent to make kicks. He was the one kicker they had interest in drafting, the hand-picked choice of senior special teams coach and kicking guru Randy Brown after he had pre-draft workouts with the top kickers.
