Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement that an internal investigation indicated a man who died on the Carnival Dream cruise ship died of natural causes.

An investigation is underway after a man from Rio Grande City died on board a Carnival cruise ship that departed from Galveston. The Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Euvelester Villarreal Jr.

Euvelester Villarreal Jr., 48, died aboard the Carnival Dream ship in the early morning hours last Wednesday, officials with the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to MySA on Tuesday. Villarreal was a resident of Rio Grande City, the county seat and largest city in rural Starr County in the Rio Grande Valley.

The FBI’s Houston field office is “aware of an incident” that took place around July 23 aboard the Carnival Dream, the agency said.

An FBI investigation is underway after an incident on a Carnival Dream cruise ship based out of Galveston, Texas, according to multiple reports. KHOU cites law enforcement sources, who claim there is a "death investigation.

While hundreds of cruise ship deaths occur each year, that translates to roughly one death per 150,000 guests.

Now, as Carnival begins to release its 2027 – 2028 cruise itineraries, the cruise line is revealing the first of its new deployments that will bring a larger ship and new short cruise options to a key city.
