Everyone knows what happened next: Alonso drove a 3-1 changeup over the right field fence for a three-run homer, and the Mets went on to win 4-2. They eliminated the Brewers, then the Philadelphia Phillies, en route to their first NLCS appearance since 2015.

Darryl Strawberry is still the Mets’ franchise home run leader. How much longer that will remain the case is uncertain, with Pete Alonso on the cusp of breaking the record that Strawberry set over eight seasons (1983-1990) in Queens, but the Mets great isn’t bemoaning his impending displacement from a franchise record.

Since debuting in 2019, Alonso has taken the league by storm — most notably during his rookie campaign, when he broke Aaron Judge’s single-season rookie home run record with 53. Now, 197 home runs later, Alonso has reached another major milestone at just 30 years old.

With that home run, Alonso now sits just one shy of Darryl Strawberry’s franchise record of 252. It took Strawberry, who represented the Mets as an All-Star seven times and finished in the top three in National League MVP balloting two times, 1,109 games from 1983-90.
