A San Francisco supervisor who pushed to turn a 2-mile stretch of highway into a car-free park faces a recall vote in his district.

Joel Engardio, the San Francisco supervisor who faced a bitter recall, has accepted his loss as the final votes were tallied late Tuesday evening. Engardio stirred outrage in his west side neighborhood when he backed a controversial ballot measure last year that led to the permanent closure of a coastal highway.
