Hundreds of thousands of Americans could see their next Social Security checks cut by as much as 50% due to a new overpayment recoupment policy. As of late July, the Social Security Administration will begin withholding up to 50% of monthly benefits from recipients who previously received an overpayment from the agency.

If you owe the government money due to previous overpayments on your Social Security checks, expect to see much smaller payments next month.

The SSA’s official schedule of Social Security benefit payments for July 2025, will be paid on the following days based on birthdate: July 9: If you’re born between day 1–10 of any given month. July 16: If you’re born between day 11–20 of any given month. July 23: If you’re born between day 21–31 of any given month.
