Two men have been sentenced to four years and three months each in prison for felling a landmark sycamore tree in northern England.

LONDON (AP) — Vandals who cut down England’s beloved Sycamore Gap tree were sentenced Tuesday to more than four years in prison for damaging the country’s natural heritage and for the outrage and distress they caused.

When the Sycamore Gap tree was felled, many began to wonder how the tree, so perfectly positioned in the central dip of the Hadrian's Wall between Housesteads and Steel Rigg, Northumberland, came to be in the first place.

Park authorities have decided Britain’s most famous trees will go on display after being felled in a ‘malicious act of vandalism’ last year. Northumberland National Park said the largest section of the tree that once stood at Sycamore Gap will go on display at a nearby tourist attraction, The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre.

When the Sycamore Gap tree was illegally cut down in September 2023, TV chef and Hairy Biker Si King was among those devastated by its wanton destruction. Such was his anger, it took nearly two years and the conviction of two men before he could bring himself to visit the site again.
