In a vote of confidence for Virginia’s growing life sciences sector, pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca announced plans to build its largest drug manufacturing facility in the world somewhere in the commonwealth — marking the company’s single biggest investment ever.

AstraZeneca, the U.K.-Swedish pharmaceutical giant, on Tuesday announced a plan to invest some $50 billion in the U.S. in a move hailed by the Trump administration — though much of what it is announcing it’s already announced before.

The U.K. biopharmaceutical giant’s plans include a proposal for a new drug substance manufacturing center focused on weight-loss drugs.
