New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley will all experience air quality within the 101-150 range on the air quality index Sunday, the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation forecasted—meaning the air could contain fine particles and could be “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”

Smoke from wildfires in Manitoba, a Western province facing its worst fire season in 30 years, has created hazardous air quality conditions across Eastern Canada and the United States.

Toronto had the second worst air quality in the world next to New York Friday morning, according to IQAir’s rankings. The city remains under a Environment Canada special air quality statement.

An air quality alert will continue for a second day in New York City and the surrounding area. Officials are warning of poor air quality all day Sunday due to wildfires in Canada. The Air Quality Index is expected to exceed 100.

The alert from the state Department of Environmental Conservation, which is in effect from 10 a.m. to midnight, includes the Capital Region, Adirondacks, Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island.
