Already in 2025, the United States has reported more measles cases than in any full year since the early ‘90s, according to federal data. And that record-setting case count has been driven by a massive outbreak that began in Texas.

The Texas Department of State Health Services says three new measles cases have been detected in the last week in connection to an outbreak in West Texas.

Texas health officials on Tuesday said the county at the center of the state's measles outbreak is no longer classified as an outbreak county.

Gaines County, where Texas' massive measles outbreak began in January, no longer has ongoing measles transmission, according to state health officials.

The U.S. has seen more measles cases in 2025 than in any year since the virus was declared "eliminated" in 2000.

In the last week, the Kansas health department has recorded four additional measles cases. That brings the state's total to 87, most of which are in southwest Kansas. The disease was declared eliminated 25 years ago.
