After several delays, the launch of ChatGPT-5 appears imminent, with leaks and teasers hinting at a major leap over GPT-4. While OpenAI has not officially confirmed every feature, users can expect significant upgrades in speed, reasoning, and multimodal capabilities, possibly extending beyond text to include voice, images, and even video.

Despite the company's name, OpenAI hasn't dropped an open version of its AI models since GPT-2 in 2019. That changed on Tuesday, as CEO Sam Altman shared two new open-weights, reasoning AI models, named gpt-oss-120b (120 billion parameters) and gpt-oss-20b (20 billion parameters).

It’s the first such models it’s launched in over five years, as pressure in the US grows to respond to China’s dominance in open models.
