Los Angeles’s mayor said Sunday that masked immigration agents helped create a “reign of terror.” ICE’s director said agents could wear masks to “keep them and their families safe.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D) on Sunday pushed back against the Trump administration’s reasoning for allowing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to wear masks as a means of protecting themselves and their families from retaliation.

Critics of the bill say masks allow law enforcement officers to protect their personal safety amid rising assaults on immigration enforcement agents.
