Nearly a century ago, fire crews at Grand Canyon National Park used tree towers — ladders attached to the park’s tallest trees — to spot wildfires. Now, in an ironic twist, the last tree tower standing on the North Rim has itself been rescued from wildfire.

A fast-moving wildfire destroyed a historic lodge and dozens of other structures on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, forcing officials to close access to that area for the season, the park said Sunday.
