A 4.4-magnitude earthquake centered just west of Muscoy, and north of San Bernardino, rattled Southern California at 9:32 a.m. on Thursday, July 31, according to the United States Geological Survey. It some areas, it lasted just a couple of seconds and was gentle. Elsewhere, it went on much longer.

Tents and other items were cleared out of a lot in Van Nuys early Thursday that has been the site of a large homeless encampment for years. The location is near the 405 Freeway near Oxnard Street, where about two dozen tents were located in a lot next to businesses that include a Public Storage.
