Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed on Thursday that reigning AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil will make his long-awaited season debut against the Miami Marlins on Sunday. Gil, who turned 27 in June, suffered a high-grade lat strain in spring training.

Luis Gil is expected to make his season debut for the New York Yankees on Sunday at Miami after missing four months with a lat strain. The reigning AL Rookie of the Year struck out seven over 4 1/3 innings Tuesday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Luis Gil might need one more minor-league rehab start before the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year comes back to the Yankees for his season debut. Aaron Boone said there’s “probably a good chance” Gil will make another start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after allowing five earned runs over 3 ¹/₃ innings Wednesday night for the RailRiders.

Luis Gil has made two good rehab starts, and the Yankees will decide if one more is enough for him to return to the rotation.
