Google is set to start mixing ads into its new AI-generated search answers. It’s a test of how the company’s biggest revenue stream can adapt to the age of generative AI.

In the example shared by Google, the search engine’s AI overview lists a response to the question: “how do I get wrinkles out of clothes?” Beneath the AI-generated suggestions, there’s a new “Sponsored” section with a carousel showing wrinkle spray you can buy from places like Walmart and Instacart.

Google will start testing search and shopping ads in its AI-generated answers in the U.S., the Alphabet-owned company said on Tuesday, days after it rolled out the AI Overviews feature widely at its annual I/O conference.

Existing Search, Performance Max and Shopping campaigns will be automatically eligible to appear in Google's AI Overviews.

Google launched its test for AI Overviews with the general public in the U.S. in March. This was done on the back of its acquisition of a new Head of Search, Liz Reid. The company hoped that the many questions users have will push its AI to scour multiple sources across the web to deliver appropriate answers.

Thanks to Google's latest tricks, you can ask for an AI Overview to summarize the results. You can seek out recommendations for gifts, things to do, or TV shows and movies to watch. You're able to ask for help generating code and other content.
