I have several outdoor cameras at my main home. They are integrated into my home automation app as part of the security system. None are Ring branded cameras. I wanted to try other brands at a second property that is 'L' shaped with the garage in front, and thus, very limited view of the front yard and driveway from inside the house. \r\n\r\nI was interested in this particular Ring camera for three reasons: 1) It is outdoor rated and appears to be robust. 2) The lights and the orange color. Since this was to be used on the front drive, having as a deterrent as well as a recording device for nefarious activities is helpful.\r\n\r\nIt was extremely easy to set up on my mobile phone. The menu is simple and, for the most part, the system is user friendly. It has more advanced capabilities that can be utilized that might require a bit of reading of instructions. The only problem I had in the installation is that I wanted it on the far side of the garage under the eaves. For protection from the sun and I will be painting the wooden trim and garage door soon. Some position testing using a ladder to set the Ring Spotlight Cam and worn shingles above it. However, some testing of location revealed that my wifi signal at that location had the Ring Spotlight camera dropping offline easily. I ended up mounting it front and center at 9' high over the garage door. It maintains wifi connection there and is quite visible to any wood be trespassers. Even the door-to-door solar sales people that are a PIA and won't leave when told to go. Now, I'll have recordings of their shenanigans for my own use.\r\n\r\nThe main plus of this Ring Camera is how simple it is to set up. And, the annual fee for the plan for one cameras is quite reasonable at $30. Because it has two way communication, I can talk to someone in the driveway, even if I'm not home. Or, I can set the very loud, camera alarm off and scare them into leaving.\r\n\r\nThe battery life so far is actually quite good. It uses 1% to 2% of charge per day. Which means a two month life before recharge is doable. Mine came with only one battery and a charge cable for the battery. Solar panels are available. I may opt for both a second battery and a solar charger in the future, just to simplify things for myself at this location. And so that I can check live view as often as I want without worrying about cutting charge life.\r\n\r\nThere are a few negatives however. This is one of the more expensive outdoor cameras that I've seen. The 1080P quality is great for daytime. But at night, the image lacks clear enough definition to identify a person. There is no local storage option. To get storage and to be able to use several other camera features requires a Ring Protect Plan. Otherwise, this camera pretty much becomes a trespass alert system the ability to monitor it during an event.\r\n\r\nOverall, I'd say take a look. But be sure it will meet your particular needs. It does seem to be a great solution because of it's size, shape, color and capabilities to be easily moved around from project site to project site for security purposes. As long as you have 24/7 internet access and wifi at the location.
