I had a VERY expensive pair of Thunderbolt 2 drive arrays (2x 8TB WD Thunderbolt Duos) for my old iMac 2013 that I replaced with a shiny new 2016 MacBook Pro 15. This lead me to some peripheral challenges due to the lack of non-TB3/USB Type-C Ports, and the switch from an iMac to a MacBook Pro lead me to consider some Thunderbolt-based monitor options as well, since I wanted to still have a desk-based experience when at the home office. Rather than invest (another) small fortunes in the 4 and 5k Thunderbolt 3 options endorsed by Apple, I found that there were also MANY new Thunderbolt 2-based graphics monitors being made available and on the market (having had an Apple Thunderbolt display previous to my iMac, I was hoping by now they'd put out another studio display-esque replcement but it seems thats not happening now). I quickly procured a large display that was based on Thunderbolt 2, which allowed me to daisy-chain my storage array into a configuration that would allow me to single-cable dock, sans power delivery, to my new monitor, 16TB of logical storage, and a few USB accessories thanks to the monitor's USB3 hub that could be accessed through the Thunderbolt bus on-board. There was just one problem with my design - The monitor could only deliver this connection over Thunderbolt 2 - I was still stuck with a legacy connector, Thanks to this adapter, I'm able to maintain a clean single-cable approach, but I am required to still connect a power cable via Type-C connection to the MacBook Pro separately. This isn't a problem on the 15" MacBook Pro on my desk, but for those with the 2016 13" MBP (without Touch Bar) this solution would tie up BOTH of their 2 connectors (one for power, one delivering the Thunderbolt 2 bus via adapter). If Apple wanted to really have something here they could have used the Thunderbolt 3 technology and created an adapter that could deliver both a Thunderbolt 1/2 signal, and had a pass-through power port so that I could "splice in" power delivery. Also, since Thunderbolt requires a controller on board cables and adapters as well, it would have been nice if this particular adapter had been a bit longer, or offered in cable form, since currently I have to connec tthis adapter at the laptop end of the connection, making for more bulk. Again, if this had been a 2-port adapter (with Mini DP Thunderbolt 2 and Type-C Power on one end, and 3 ft of TB3 cable connecting to a single type C on the other) this would be a useful adapter for lots of desk-based scenarios. As the adapter stands, its a great, compact field adapter for connecting your portable device to Thunderbolt resources or daisy chains and does the job consistently. I have had no issues connecting my 2 WD RAID arrays nor my LG 34UB88 monitor. This method has no trouble driving the (almost) 4K display and the drives seem to have their full throughput as well, though I haven't benchmarked this (I dont like to benchmark the drives much, as they are production arrays and stressing the disks when everything is working well is just asking for disaster. All in all, typical apple quality, but I'll be on the lookout for a Type-C to Thunderbolt 2 docking solution in the long run to avoid this dongle setup at the machine on my desk.
