Overall, I am very pleased with this lathe, and for my needs, the variable speed with digital read out is a must. It is solidly built, very quiet, and reasonably priced.. The only issue I have is that the locking handles on both the tailstock and tool support are located where the two handles will hit each other before they can be tightened and it is difficult to adjust them to find a place where they do not hit when tightening both. Also, something Grizzly should address is that other companies online that offer this lathe have the RPM wrong. Many other vendors say this lathe has 650 to 3800 RPM variable speed. That is not correct.. Grizzlies website says this lathe is 300 to 3700 RPM which is correct. In fact, mine will go down to 290 RPM. When looking at this lane listed by other companies I almost did not purchase it because 650 RPM minimum is too high.

I took delivery about two weeks ago and so far I'm very impressed. I also bought the self centering chuck to start out (SKU# H6265) which you'll need right off the bat. along with pin and dovetail jaws for it (SKU# H6268 & H6269). I'm experienced with wood but a beginner at turning, well I can confidently say this machine made me feel like a seasoned professional. I'm using it primarily to turn finials for clocks with hopes to do dials as well. After a few YouTube videos I was off and running and this lathe was nearly ready to use right out of the box. Glad I sprung for the 12" swing over the 10" to get the 3/4HP motor over the 1/2HP, truly where bigger is definitely better and the variable speed is so convenient. Already owned chisel from dabbling on my metal lathe but sawdust and oil just don't mix. I'm a very happy camper now!

I have a smaller lathe that I make pens and small bowls. I will start making them on this one also. My other Grizzly is aprox. 15 years old and works fine. Had to replace the belt but that is certainly understandable. My intensions were always to start small and learn and then purchase a bigger floor model to make pool cues and large bowls. Unfortunately, my shop limits me to size and this bench top is perfect for my situation. At this point I have only played around with it but it runs very smoothly and seems to be a very good quality for a very affordable price. I would definitely recommend this lathe and Grizzly to a hobbyist. a professional may not like the restrictions that a bench top has, but as for Grizzly quality and value, I think they would be highly impressed.

I purchased this wood lathe (and bed extension) a little over two years ago and I am very pleased with the purchase. I have turned bowls, vases, tool handles, and even a couple of table legs (the main reason for purchasing the bed extension). I added a couple of chucks, live centers, drive centers, tools, and made a steady rest for it (the steady rest I purchased online was useless) with ideas from a couple of online videos. This lathe is an indispensable part of my shop now. There was one very minor issue at the beginning that customer service took care of quickly. Very pleased.

New to turning, built a cart for it but the control panel sits 3/4in below Lathe. I had to rout a section so it would go on. Still in learning mode and only turned one item but its smooth so far. digital rpm is nice to have for newbies, range is 300 to almost 1300 on first belt position. Item seems solid, not feeling much vibration so far, small about at about 1100rpm. Will update if anything changes but seems worth a few $ vs the Wen 12-18

This lathe is packed with features- variable speed control with two different pulley positions for slow speed and fast speed turning, solid and stable tail stock, and easily adjustable. I also bought a wood chuck but had to return for a replacement, on the lathe, the tool rest is really rough needed to be cleaned up from the casting. where my finger goes for guiding the tool is so rough it made my finger sore also the top where the tool rides is rough. otherwise I am satisfied. Just started and am happy with first project. Just finished work on a candlestick. Made it in three parts ( should have been two) and it looks fairly good for a first time effort. Used wild cherry for the stem and candle holder. Base is yellow pine. For a finish I used linseed oil and beeswax.

This is great ‘beginner’s” lathe. Big enough for learning to develop skills while producing some beautiful objects, small enough to use in a shop with limited space, powerful enough to turn hardwoods, and heavy enough to not require permanent mounting. A great choice at a great price!

My shop is full of Grizzly tools. I’ve been happy with all of them and have even enjoyed this lathe. If you are looking for something that will give you precision however, I’d recommend upgrading to a more precision model or brand. There’s just about 1mm slop in the tail stock on this model that makes toy making (hollow spin tops) hard because it’s difficult to drill a precision hole dead straight with the Jacob’s chuck. Not a big deal if that’s not your jam. I’ve been able to make beautiful ornaments and goblets with this lathe.

Easy to use, quiet and solid lathe. The most complicated thing is shifting the belts and even that’s easy. I have had no experience with lathes and so far this has been a breeze and a joy. Im making pens like a proper generic middle aged white dad 😂

This little lathe does what its supposted to do. Plenty powerful for the small turning projects I'm using it for (ship model masts and pens). The variable speed is smooth. The centers were aligned out of the box. Everything is qorking perfectly.

This will be my second lathe, the first didn’t get a whole lot of use. The unit seems well built. Love the variable speed dial. Everything runs true. My disappointment is in the advertised “throw” and the lack over power. The throw is supposed to be 12”, and it is, until you add the tool rest support. Now you are down to about 10”. It doesn’t take much force to slow or stall the unit. For a beginner at this price point it is pretty decent, though.
