I was skeptical about the idea of buying just a key card, with the actual software residing somewhere on a Microsoft server, but in reality it turned out to be a painless experience. If you think about it, it is about the only available software distribution option left because many laptops sold today do not even have a DVD drive - network connection is their only "door to the world".\n\nDownload instructions on Amazon were accurate, and I had Office installed on my new desktop in about 20-30 minutes. Download was a little slow (hence the time it took), but with a little patience worked out fine.\n\nSeveral things which I read about in reviews turned out to be misleading.\n\n1. "You can no longer get a copy of Office on a disk". Only partially true. Once you log in and typed in your key card number, you can either start installation of the 32-bit office, or click on "advanced installation options" [not sure about the exact name] link to either download 64-bit office, or download an 32/64 bit offline installer. This is an almost 4 GB image file which contains both 32 and 64 bit office versions and can be burned on a DVD. You are not limited to just one option or just a single download. I did all of it - installed 64 bit office, changed my mind, uninstalled it, installed 32 bit office, and also downloaded the offline installer "just in case".\n\n2. "You cannot get a 64 bit Office". Not true. 32 bit office is a default option. 64 bit office is an option available under advanced installation options. As Microsoft points out, you most likely do not want a 64 bit option unless you have facts-driven reasons to think otherwise. Microsoft has been trying to bring a 64 bit version to the market since Office 2007 and all such attempts were between unsuccessful. This was not only because 64 bit versions were less stable (this most likely has been resolved by now), but also because all third party add-ons had to be re-written to 64 bit, and this did not happen. Compatibility with existing 32-bit add-ons which have no 64 bit versions remains a problem of 64 bit Office. 64-bit version, for all practical reasons, is not any faster or better than 32 bit version. 64-bit Windows can run 32 bit applications just fine. It's only practical difference is the ability to work with HUGE files without running out of memory. It is highly unlikely that one would have to work with files which size requires 64 bit (greater than impossible to imagine several gigabytes). The good news is: you can install 64 bit version if you wish, and if you change your mind, you can remove it, log to your Microsoft account and run installation of the 32 bit version instead. Or the other way around.\n\nI've been using Office 2007 for 10 years. It still does everything I need. There was really no reason to upgrade to Office 2016, other than getting a new license for a newly purchased computer. All features that I need existed since office 2000, if not earlier. I am sure I will use Office 2016 for the next 10 years without the need to upgrade. Microsoft has been gradually moving to subscription model (Office 365). I cannot exclude that Office 2016 may be the last perpetual version available. Good enough for me. Cannot care less about possible "new features" available with subscription version.
